Lily had sent her sister-in-law away to avoid getting sick, because Falco was currently fighting the flu. Her sister-in-law was with child, and she didn’t need to be exposed to her husband’s illness and endanger the baby. Her sister-in-law went with reluctance, and Belladonna wanted to stay with Lily. Lily kept Belladonna away from her father until he got through the worst of his illness, so that the baby wouldn’t be sick, either.

Lily was sitting in the living room with Belladonna, watching her play with her toys while she babbled and said “Illy” over and over again. That was Belladonna’s way of saying “Lily,” which was Belladonna’s first word last week.

Lily sighed, then got up to check on her brother. She knocked carefully on the door, in case he was resting.

“Come in,” Falco called when he heard the knock. He winced when he heard how weak his own voice. Though he’d been feeling noticeably better, he was still not well enough to be up for too long. Reading had proved to be too draining as well, so he was left with little to do and nearly no company. He was incredibly grateful to Lily for not only taking care of him, but his family as well.

“Hey,” Lily said softly, walking over to her brother’s bedside. “How are you feeling today? Is there anything I can get for you?”

Lily could still hear Belladonna playing with her toys and babbling to herself, and she smiled. “Your daughter misses her daddy, but I don’t know if we should expose you to her yet or not.”

“I miss her as well, but I doubt I’m safe to be around yet,” he smiled ruefully, “I do feel better though. But it can be quite boring, lying here with nothing to keep my occupied but my thoughts.” He picked at his blanket absentmindedly. His thoughts hadn’t brought him much peace at all, but he did not want to mention that.

Lily smiled sadly. “I know. Remember when I was about five and I had a bout of what the doctor called chicken pox? Do you remember how restless I would be and Mama would have to come in and read to me and play with me because I just couldn’t sleep? I remember how much you helped out with me, and I want to do the same for you. After all….you’re all I have left, since mum and dad are both gone.”

Lily sighed sadly at the memory of her parents, knowing her mother was gone for a little over a year and her father had been gone for almost three months. Everything since then was filled with nothing but pain, but Frodo was helping to keep her sane and she knew that her sister-in-law was keeping Falco sane as well.

“You can talk to me, you know,” Lily said to him. “If there’s anything on your mind.”

“Those were simpler times,” Falco smiled at the memory. He loved his sister, and he wished with all his heart that she’d finally have the life she deserved. Fate hadn’t been kind to the both of them, but Falco knew he would do anything to assure his sister’s happiness. He’d already done more than he could bear.

“I haven’t been thinking about much,” he lied, “Just about how the garden is growing while I’m unable to go out and take care of it. And about all the food I’ll finally be able to eat when I’m able to stomach it,” he added with a laugh.

Lily laughed softly at his last spoken words. “If you would like, I could go out and tend the garden tomorrow when the sun comes out. It’s been cooler now than in recent days. As for food, I could prepare you your favorite dinner once you’re better.”

Lily forgot to add that her sister-in-law, May, would probably enjoy cooking, too. Lily just didn’t want to overwork her, for she needed her rest. She remembered when May was with Belladonna, Falco would always make sure she was resting. Of course, with Belladonna, the doctor told them there could be a risk to the baby’s health if May didn’t follow orders, so it was rest for May. Lily didn’t want the same thing happening here.

“Is there anything I can get for you now?” Lily asked Falco as she heard Belladonna begin cooing in the living room.

Falco smiled fondly at the sound of his daughter’s voice. “I wouldn’t mind some tea, if it’s not too much trouble. And Lily, thank you so much for all your help. Please don’t overwork yourself, though. You need to take care of yourself as well. You’re already doing so much for me! The garden can wait, I’ll take care of it when I’m well enough to be up and about.”

Lily smiled. “I will get you some tea, and don’t worry about me, dear brother. I have nothing else to do and nowhere to be.”

Lily left the room to put the tea on, and Belladonna crawled and cackled toward her. Lily picked her up and carried her as she started the fire under the kettle, and as the water was heating, Belladonna became fascinated with the small bow on the front of Lily’s dress. Belladonna picked at it and tried to untie it, but it was already sewn on tied, so it wouldn’t come loose.

Lily just smiled down at her niece, who was becoming frustrated by the fact that the bow wouldn’t untie. Finally, the baby gave up and looked up at Lily with a smile. “Illy!” Belladonna cried, pointing up at Lily. “Illy! Illy”

Lily smiled back at her and kissed Belladonna’s curls. “That’s right, sweetheart. I’m Lily and I’m your aunt.”

Finally, the water was done heating, so Lily sat Belladonna back in the living room and took the water from the stove. She brewed the tea, then took some into Falco’s room.

It had been a lovely day in the Shire. Lily was busy taking care of her little niece while her brother fought the flu. Her sister was resting at her own sister’s home so that she wouldn’t be in danger of getting sick and possibly harming the baby inside of her. Lily offered to watch Belladonna and take care of Falco, and that is what she was doing.

Merry had offered to watch Belladonna and take care of Falco while Lily took a walk today. She needed some fresh air and a clear head, so Lily took him up on his offer. However, the sky indicated that it could start raining at any given moment, and Lily debated turning around and going back home. The thought was barely out of her head when she felt a single raindrop touch her skin.

Lily began to run ahead, and realized that she wasn’t far from Bag End. Would Frodo mind if she stopped by? After all, his house was closer than her own, and she really didn’t want to be caught in a downpour. Lily ran toward Bag End and knocked, hoping she wasn’t disturbing Frodo today.
